Get the domain you want

How often have we come across a situation where we want a domain but has been booked already? Quiet often, right? The domain you want has been purchased by a squatter and asking for hell lot of dollars to sell it.

Now how to get domain you want? Let’s take my example. I wanted the domain name sarfaraz.com. I searched for its availability and found that it has been booked already. I visited the site, and found the domain to be booked by a squatter and is available for sale. For once I was tempted to purchase it. But in the end I decided against it. Later in the evening I thought of purchasing the domain arfaraz.com. I was sure of its availability since it’s not a complete name or a word. As hoped it wasn’t.

After purchasing it I just added a sub-domain to it and there you go my first name domain is with me. (BTW rafaraz.com is still available if any Sarfaraz out there wanna have this domain). Similarly if want a domain name which is already booked, try removing characters one by one from the beginning of the word and check for its availability. I am sure you will get the required domain. Unless it’s a real short domain that your are looking for. Then just add those removed characters as sub-domain. For example if you are looking for domain jonathan.com you can book onathan.com (is available) and then add a “j” as sub-domain.

Make full use of sub-domains. Don’t throw your money at those squatters instead show them the middle finger.

Except that people don't go to g.oogle.com they go to google.com.
Outside the nerd herd your going to have a hard time getting people to remember your URL this way.

Jerk thats true, it will be really hard for people to remember such domain name. But if more & more people start using such domains (which i foresee them as) it wont be a problem any more.

I wouldn't exactly agree with you, The Jerk. While you do make a valid point, URLs that are difficult to remember are really not a detriment to a site's popularity, especially in recent days.

Direct type in (people who will type in s.arfaraz.com in their browser) visitors matter, and yes, they are the people who will usually be the repeat visitors of your site. BUT *most* new visitors to a site, any site, come in through search engine (and other organic - digg, technorati, etc.) traffic. If you can prove to the new visitors that your site has merit enough to have them visit again, I'm sure that they will find a way.

People also typically bookmark the sites they visit most often as well.

I definitely agree with Sarfaraz, I'd rather not pay somebody who's squatting on dhiraj.com and rather take a longer domain (my site) or (like Sarfaraz) take a different spelling.

Del.icio.us is a beautiful example of this.

And I can back this up with traffic reports and analytics if you wish to take this further. :-P

To prove what Dhiraj said my most viewed page is RSS.
Today most of the visitors come either through thier bookmarks or rss.
