I had emailed Google pointing them to my blog post about inappropriate result count. I wasn’t expecting their reply. After waiting for few days I had given up hope of any reply. Then on 10th May they replied to my email. This is what they have to say.

Hi Sarfaraz,

Thank you for your note. As you mentioned, the numbers in question are an
estimate; however, we appreciate your bringing this to our attention, and
we'll investigate.

Regards,
The Google Team

Cool.

At least we know (now) that there's humans sitting behind Google's public email addresses and they actually respond as well.

i wouldnt trust the toolbar for any accurate data, one can max take it as an indication - as mentioned (estimate). I use IE so wont specifically spk about the firefox search results numbers but yes my logic is based on the PR thingy. The servers backing the results and the toolbar are different. And it takes quite some time for the data to be synced between these two. Infact lately, since lot of weightage of a site is based on the PR of the site by internet marketers, which is then exploited. Google is purposely not updaing PR, so as to refrain ppl from using the PR as a measuring tool. So the difference in results is not a bug, its moreover showing the old data, which is meant to hint the popularity of the term as opposed to the other terms...............just my 2 cents :)

thanx punkaj for your 2 cents :). ur suggestion makes lot of sense.
i think toolbar only counts sites with high PR. like google does when you check for backlinks.
